This is one of the questions we’re asked most often. Historically, amber gloves within the TraffiSystem® represented Cut Level B protection only. However, following updates to the EN388 cut resistance testing standard, we revised our colour classification to better reflect real life protection levels and enhance wearer safety.
Previously, the TraffiSystem worked like this:
Red = Cut Level A
Amber = Cut Level B
Green = Cut Level C-F
Under the updated TraffiSystem®, Cut Level C is now considered medium cut resistance rather than high cut resistance. As a result, Cut Levels B and C both sit within our Amber category, and Green is reserved for higher cut protection gloves that fall under cut protection levels of D-F.
Why was the cut test updated?
Before the 2016 revision of EN388, cut resistance for safety gloves was measured using the Coupe Test. This test uses a rotating circular blade that repeatedly passes back and forth over a fabric sample under a consistent load until the material is cut through. The result is measured from levels 1-5, with the higher number indicating greater resistance.
However, modern high-performance cut-resistant materials were designed to have a blunting effect on blades, particularly those including glass or steel fibres. Therefore, this can artificially increase the number of cycles required to cut through the material and result in overstated cut resistance scores. To address this limitation, the ISO 13997 (TDM) cut test was introduced.
The TDM test uses a straight blade for a single cutting movement and measures the force required to cut through a fabric sample. Cut resistance is then measured from A-F, with F representing the highest level of protection. The result is a much more realistic simulation of how a glove is likely to perform against cut hazards operatives may encounter in the workplace.
Why are some of your Cut Level C gloves still green?
Some existing Cut Level C gloves remain green because the updated TraffiSystem® is being implemented across the portfolio in phases.
Cut Level C was initially included within green as part of this higher-protection positioning. However, as the TDM system became more widely established and the performance differences between Levels A-F became clearer, we reviewed the TraffiSystem® to create a more balanced classification.
As products are reviewed, updated and transitioned through normal stock and packaging cycles, Cut Level C products will progressively move into the amber category, while green will be reserved for Cut Levels D-F.
This phased approach allows us to implement the updated colour system consistently across the range without unnecessary product or packaging disruption.
Will there be any exceptions?
A small number of existing Cut Level C products currently remain within the green category as part of the phased implementation of the updated TraffiSystem® colour classification.

These products will be reviewed and progressively aligned with the updated colour system through planned product, packaging and range updates. Under the revised TraffiSystem®, amber represents Cut Levels B–C, while green is reserved for Cut Levels D–F.
During this transition period, some products may therefore temporarily remain outside the updated colour framework. Their certified EN 388 cut performance remains unchanged.

Remember: Always select gloves based on the cut resistance required for the task and risk assessment, not relying on colour alone. The TraffiSystem® is designed to simplify product selection, while the EN388 cut resistance rating provides the definitive measure of protection.
