Balfour Beatty Vinci | HS2

Balfour Beatty VINCI (BBV) is a joint venture delivering 90km of the HS2 route in the Midlands across two civil engineering packages valued at approximately £5 billion. With 9,000 workers from over 70 nationalities on site, consistent hand protection requires clear visual systems and on-the-ground support.

This is how Traffi worked with BBV to bring consistency, compliance and sustainability to hand protection.

What was the initial problem?

Balfour Beatty VINCI is delivering 90km of the HS2 route in the Midlands across two civil engineering packages, with 9,000 workers from over 70 nationalities on site. They were looking to consolidate their glove range to reduce hand injuries and bring consistency across the whole project.

They also wanted to implement a simple glove identification system to ensure that their workforce were wearing the correct gloves for the task. Across such a large and diverse workforce, a clear visual system was essential to support compliance.

Why Traffi?

Across a workforce of 9,000 people from more than 70 nationalities, BBV needed a hand protection approach that was simple to understand and easy to check. The colour coded TraffiSystem provided a clear, visual way to do this, while supporting the project's emphasis on sustainability. Traffi had also worked with Balfour Beatty since 2011.

OUR SOLUTION

After conducting thorough glove surveys across several sites, Traffi recommended a rationalised range based on the survey observations and its experience with Balfour Beatty since 2011. Traffi then worked closely with the team to carry out glove trials with workers.

THE RESULT

Glove trials gave workers the opportunity to try the gloves in real working environments and provide feedback. By introducing a new minimum cut level of C and the colour coded TraffiSystem, BBV saw a marked difference in the simplicity and consistency of their hand protection.

This makes engagement on site easier and supports compliance with their Hand Protection Policy.
